One of Watson’s original homes is looking for its next set of owners after being in the same family for some 53 years.
The Irvine Street home is set for auction next Saturday to allow the current elderly owner to downsize.
Son, John Ceplecha, recalls how his father, a Czech veteran of the Snowy hydro scheme, was keen for a big block and settled on Watson, then a new suburb back in 1963.
“It was pretty much sheep paddocks and new roads and the sheep would often be on those,” he says.
“There were only the odd few homes around – the neighbour across the road wanted my father to sit our build lower on its foundations so he wouldn’t lose his mountain views.
“There wasn’t much else to see – it was all cleared,” John says.
The home was built by well-known builder AV Jennings.
“It’s a solid home with a layout that works really well,” John says.
Outside, one of the property’s distinctive features is its mature boundary hedges and John well remembers how they came about.
“I planted the whole lot of them around 1966 – it was quite the job because the soil was so shallow,” he says.
John says there had been significant interest in the property and it would likely appeal to a young family.
“It’s ready to move in, but it’s also got a lot of potential for renovations and extensions,” he says.
The three-bedroom, double brick home has a bathroom, shower room, separate toilet and laundry.
The elevation of the home offers a space for a wine cellar or storage room underneath.
The well-maintained grounds are filled with established trees and shrubs with beautiful stone walls on 848 square metres of land that’s close to just about everything.
No. 82 Irvine Street, Watson, will be sold by auction on Saturday, September 3, at 11am by Luton Properties Dickson through agent Christine Shaw. Price guide: $600,000-plus. Inspection: Saturday, August 27, 10.30-11.15am. EER: 0.5.
Tamara Chafee remembers exactly when she and her husband Will bought their “magical” Lyneham home.
“It was 12 hours after my eldest son was born and Will raced off to the auction and bought it,” she says.
“I had viewed it with him in the latter stages of my pregnancy and we had both fallen in love with the house.”
The Earle Street property sits on 641 square metres of artfully landscaped surroundings in a quiet, leafy area in the heights of Lyneham.
“The house is just filled with light and connects with the outdoors,” Tamara says.
“We enjoy beautiful, breathtaking sunrises over Mount Majura.”
This immaculate home presents a fantastic lifestyle, offering three good-sized bedrooms, a new kitchen, and a spacious living and dining area which flows onto the large architect-designed outdoor entertaining deck.
The home is conveniently located close to amenities, transport, schools, universities and the CBD.
