Soma sits in a pleasant spot slightly removed from the bustle of the main arterial roads of Coombs.

The site itself is still right in the centre of the action, bordered by established homes and school playing fields, rather than acres of medium-density development.

Architect Frank Parisi of Oztal Architects describes the homes as “very contemporary terraced town-housing”.

He believes that the articulated frontages and vibrate colour schemes used in facades throughout the development give the dwellings a feeling of variety and individuality.

Privacy and connection are well balanced at Soma with homes featuring private courtyards, while the streetscapes are broken up by pockets of communal space.

Coombs is slated to be home to the first community hub of the Molonglo Valley, which will bring shops, a public school and a community facility to the area. The suburb has been planned around pedestrian amenity with a fitness circuit and trails through its open spaces, as well providing access to Mount Stromlo.

Soma gives residents good access to the wealth of parkland along the Molonglo River, and Parisi says one of the suburb’s drawcards is that it features “lots of open space”.

Parisi says Coombs is also convenient, just a short drive on the expressway from Woden or Belconnen and 12 minutes’ drive from Canberra’s centre.

The 82 townhouses at Soma come in three and four-bedroom designs with flexible options, such as the possibility of a ground-floor bedroom and the option of double or single lock-up garages.

The main bedroom features a balcony and ensuite. With 90 per cent of the homes facing north, they promise to be filled with natural light.

Double glazing is standard throughout, and this addition to the original design is expected to raise the average EER.

Construction has begun with completion expected in the third quarter of the year. A selection of three and four-bedroom homes are still available for sale.
