‘Something lives down there’: Couple bought a house without inspecting the pool

A couple in the US is lamenting a decision not to inspect the state of a swimming pool in the backyard of a property they purchased.

Summer and her husband Patrick recently took the keys to a large family fixer-upper. They have plans to renovate the home, which is now likely to extend into the back garden.

The young couple, who have two children together, did not reveal the location of the home but rather candidly shared their inspection omission in a video to their TikTok page.

“It’s bad,” Patrick can be heard saying to Summer as he picks up a corner of the pool cover.

“How bad?” Summer can be heard asking.

“It is bad. It’s going to need some work,” Patrick replied.

Summer and Patrick bought the home without taking a close look at the pool.

Patrick then steps forward, peeling back the large blue sheeting to reveal what could be described as a wasteland.

The pool liner has pulled away, revealing large patches of the concrete floor covered in a dark, dry substance. There’s leaves everywhere and an indistinguishable odour.

“I’m scared,” Summer says gently as she lowers her phone to record more.

Patrick offers a half-joke.

“Something lives down there,” he says.

Though he’s quick to offer levity to the potentially financially stressful situation.

“It ain’t that bad,” he says to his wife.

“Couple afternoons, I can fix that.”

Summer joins in.

“All we got to do is fix up this liner,” she says.

“Oh, I can see the steps… oh gosh, it smells so bad.”

Summer then asks Patrick if he’s going to have the pool up and running at some point.

He’s incredulous.

“Does it look like I’m going to have this thing up and running?” he quips back.

Lighthearted banter ensues.

“You wanted the pool,” Summer pokes.

“You wanted the pool. I wanted a basketball court.”

Patrick said he found the cause of the problem, a tree through the pool pump.

After standing back and taking in their surroundings, the couple admit their mistake.

“This is what you get when you don’t look at it,” Patrick says.

“Yeah,” Summer sighs.

“I mean we looked at it… but we didn’t look at it,” he adds.

The couple’s video struck a chord with others online.

It has been viewed more than 10 million times.

In a separate video, Patrick continues his lighthearted approach to their dilemma.

“Okay, I think I found the problem with the pool. I mean, the pool is a problem. But I think I found the problem,” he says.

“There’s a tree growing through the pump.”
