‘Stunning’ private island in Scotland lists for $560k

A wild rocky retreat in the middle of a loch could be yours for just $564,000.
Eilean Mòr – which means Big Island in Scottish Gaelic – is a 30-acre stretch of woods and wetland surrounded by the icy waters of Loch Sunart.
For generations, the isle has been owned by a single family.
Now, they have decided to pass it onto new custodians.
Eilean Mòr is a haven for seabirds, seals and rare molluscs like the flame shell. It has remained uninhabited, allowing wildlife to thrive in the absence of humans.
The listing by Bell Ingram notes there is no planning permission to build a residence on the island.
Instead, it is a “serene escape for those seeking to explore Scotland’s rugged landscapes and rich heritage”.
Eilean Mòr is accessible by boat or via a causeway that appears at low tide.
It is not to be confused with another island of the same name located 200 kilometres north-west in the Flannan Isles.
A century ago, three lighthouse keepers disappeared from this island in mysterious circumstances. Their bodies have never been found.
Buyers interested in the island in Loch Sunart will have more cheerful prospects on the horizon.
The island forms part of the Sunart Site of Special Scientific Interest and the Sunart Special Area of Conservation thanks to its rich biodiversity.
Otters can be spotted foraging in kelp beds around the loch.
Eilean Mòr is on the market for £275,000 ($564,000).
It is less than the price of a cramped studio in Sydney’s CBD, which can command nearly $700,000.
It is also substantially cheaper than Shuna Island, another Scottish isle that is asking $11.4 million.
