A beachside lot, with a tragic backstory, has hit the market on the coast in California.
The land at 20228 Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu appears to offer a blank canvas – there’s no luxury dwelling, just the remnants of a solid foundation.
The listing hints at future possibilities – a place to “build your dream coastal retreat on the sand”.
“This property features approx. 30 feet [9 metres] of ocean frontage with approximately 80 feet of depth [24 metres],” the listing reads.
The lot is said to offer rare close-in access to Santa Monica and the Westside.
“Sweeping views of the Queen’s Necklace, Palos Verdes and Catalina Island – just minutes from Santa Monica or Malibu town centre, this is a rare opportunity to design and build your own beachfront haven on the sand,” the listing reads.
A google search of the address shows a once bustling close knit community of homes along the stretch of famous sand.
Yet, with a single word, the listing also reveals a tragedy of the lot’s past.
“Fire rebuild opportunity on Big Rock Beach in Malibu,” it reads.
In January this year, deadly wildfires ripped through the Palisades, Topanga and Malibu area leaving a pathway of destruction.
Twelve people lost their lives in the fires.
More than 6800 structures, including houses, were destroyed in the blazes. Almost 1000 structures were damaged.
“The seller has already completed Phase 1 and Phase 2 lot clearance,” the listing reads.
The lot is up for sale for US$1,980,000 or more than $3 million.
