The five Daylesford homes built on the new season of The Block have been listed online with price guides of $3 million to $3.3 million.
This is more than four times the town’s median house price of $820,000, according to Domain data – a sign that the television show is continuing to position itself in prestige market territory.
House prices in Daylesford have cooled in the last year, dropping by 6.3 per cent, according to the latest Domain House Price Report. However, they are still up in the longer term, having grown 26.6 per cent over the past five years.
For the first time on the show, the 10 contestants from across the country are taking on new builds. Only the frames were completed before they arrived on site.
And, in typical Block style, they’re not small dwellings. Set on over 2300 square metres of land, each house boasts 256 square metres of living space.
The houses’ uniform size and layout levels the playing field for the Blockheads this year, but the facades of each single-storey home are different, and there is a mix of two flat and three pitched-roof designs.
Each house has four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a terrace and a shed.
Daylesford is a picturesque country town located 110 kilometres north-west of Melbourne.
Renowned for its natural mineral springs, bathhouses and heritage charm, it has evolved into a popular wellness destination. It also has a thriving culinary scene, markets and galleries, so it’s no surprise the town sits among the top Airbnb locations in Australia.
So are the contestants completing holiday homes, like the last season on Phillip Island? Not exactly, according to judge Shaynna Blaze, who is the proud owner of a country property in the nearby locale of Kyneton.
“The fact that people living in Daylesford can get to work in Melbourne, by train travel, means these places don’t just have Airbnb appeal,” she says. “They could be someone’s forever home.”
The online listings are live on Domain, and will be updated throughout the season as the finished rooms are revealed each week.
“Mid-century modern with a twist” is how the Victorian couple describe their style. The husband-and-wife duo snagged the first house on the street, with black cladding and a pitched roof.
The couple from Western Australia have opted for a contemporary design and architectural aesthetic, with curves incorporated into every room. They tell Domain their styling is inspired by Daylesford’s local arts community.
West Australian parents Britt and Taz won the House Decider Challenge and chose the house in the middle of the street because they preferred the timber facade with light cladding, saying it suited their “modern organic” style.
The mum and dad of three from the Gold Coast have the only house with external brick features. The pair aren’t afraid to take risks with colour, describing their home as the most colourful on The Block this season.
South Australian best mates Robby and Mat may have minimal renovating experience, but they made bold decisions as soon as they got on site, including making space for a wine cellar. Their vision is “contemporary country”.
