The Block Terrace and Shed reveals: Who won Al Fresco and Shed Week?

It’s a name that doesn’t easily roll off the tongue: “Al Fresco and Shed Week”. But that’s the room reveal week we’re in on The Block right now, and, look, at least it’s pretty self-explanatory, unlike “Back of House Week”, right? We’re doing the al fresco areas and the shed.

You’d think a shed would be the most boring space in the world to show off in a room reveal, but in Daylesford, you’re wrong. Our Blockheads have gotten pretty creative with the thing that’s usually filled with redback spiders and is home to Dad’s rusty lawnmower from 1995. We have art studios, gyms and even a speakeasy.

Before we get into it, though, here’s what went down this week.

A quick recap of the week leading up to this year’s al fresco and shed reveals

It’s been a lovely, wholesome week on The Block. Britt and Taz won a Country Women’s Association baking challenge and banked $10,000, but, most importantly, they earned the respect of the best Aussie chefs in the world – ladies from the bush. They also won the sustainability cash, so that’s another $20,000 (plus the envy of all the other Blockheads, of course).

Everyone had a surprise family visit, which involved a lot of tears and hugging, and was especially emotional for all the parents who got to see their kids for the first time in weeks. Adorable.

Happy families. Photo: Channel 9 / 9 Now

Also heartwarming was when Sonny and Alicia renewed their wedding vows. They are the ultimate swings-and-roundabouts couple on this show – 100 per cent love one day, 100 per cent rage-over-lighting-placement the next.

On to the room reveals.

The Block al fresco and shed reveals: Judges’ scores and comments

House 1: Emma and Ben

Emma and Ben have learned their lesson from Rumpus Room Week – their secret weapon is House 1’s elevation and views, and they have to capitalise on these at all times or else face the wrath of the judges. They honed in on their al fresco area, using electric blinds they won during a challenge to create a haven that worked, rain, hail or shine.

“Look at that view. You can really feel the height,” Marty says as soon as he walks onto their deck. Darren immediately notices the way their roof could open and close, allowing sunshine on cool days and shielding from the heat during summer. They also incorporated a heater, which he says is super-important, given Daylesford can get pretty chilly during winter.

Shaynna thinks the al fresco area feels 'blokey'. Photo: Channel 9 / 9 Now

Shaynna, however, notices how everything was a bit … black. Even in the furnishings, these guys are lacking the Daylesford softness she loves. But Marty thinks it’s really sellable. They’ve got everything buyers will want going on. “From a marketing perspective, it’s pretty hard to fault,” he says.

On to the shed. Emma and Ben have divided up their Stratco shed so one half is a simple tool shed, and the other … a golf simulator? It is weekender country, so it’s not entirely nonsensical (if a little niche).

Marty's keen on the golf simulator. Photo: Channel 9 / 9 Now

The tool shed gets a lot of love for being practical and functional. But it’s the golf simulator that gets the most attention. The judges do like it – Shaynna finds it “impressive” and says golf enthusiasts will now be locked in to House 1 on auction day. Darren likes that they’ve continued the black details from the al fresco area in this space, but thinks they should have considered a way to close their skylights so the simulator screen won’t be affected by natural light.

Then, Shaynna has a revelation. She’s realised why she felt uncomfortable on the al fresco deck – these outdoor spaces feel very “blokey”. There’s a beer fridge in the golf space, all the black styling … it’s like a gigantic man cave, except with magnificent views.

Marty doesn’t care. It’s ultra niche, yes, but he thinks having part of their shed as something that can appear in the marketing for their home is “a good strategic move”. Ben is thrilled – the golf simulator was his baby, and his risk has paid off.

House 2: Han and Can

Our favourite chaotic luxury girls are still sad about juuuust missing out on a room win last week, where they came second by half a point to Britt and Taz. They’ve had a tough week, too. Their budget for their al fresco and shed spaces was extremely minimal, since they haven’t won a lot of money this season.

As Foreman Dan says, there are poor teams and rich teams every year on The Block, and this year, Han and Can are the renovation equivalent of a university student eating packet ramen noodles for dinner every night.

Marty thinks the girls' Japanese Zen garden is a waste of space. Photo: Channel 9 / 9 Now

As a point of difference, and to enhance the serenity of their house, Can had a vision for a Japanese Zen garden around their deck. Shaynna finds it “elegant and classy”, but Marty is not into it as it’s eaten into their outdoor living space. It’s unusual, but it’s taking away from the value of their home.

While Shaynna does love the Zen garden, she has issues with the rest of their al fresco layout. There’s a drinks cabinet “shoved” underneath a TV. There are unfinished elements, like ungrouted tiles. And the back of their barbecue is on proud display, which is a huge styling no-no in all the judges’ books.

“What I’ve always had a problem with when it comes to the girls is they can’t sell the dream,” Shaynna says.

On to the shed, and there’s a lot going on. One half is an artist’s studio, but then there are also a bunch of garden seedlings on some ugly shelves. What on Earth?

“They’ve put a lot of effort into beautifying a shed,” Darren says, and not in a complimentary way. More in the way you would say, “Wow, I love the … layers,” to your hairdresser after a terrible haircut.

The judges are confused about what's going on in the shed. Photo: Channel 9 / 9 Now

He has no idea why they bothered to install skylights in the shed, spending money in a space that doesn’t need it. “It’s an expensive solution to a shed roof,” he says, but Shaynna notes that if you were an artist, you’d love all the natural light. Darren thinks it’s a commendable effort, but it’s still odd that they’ve put so much into this area when they could have spent more time finishing the deck, which has a bigger return on investment.

The other half of the shed is also not finished, but more importantly, it feels confused. It has different brick details on the artist’s side of the structure. Darren says it all feels really messy, and Marty agrees. “I’m keen to get out of here,” he says, which is not what you want a real estate agent saying about any space in your home.

House 3: Britt and Taz

Our wellness warriors have big plans for their outdoor spaces and want to ensure that House 3 isn’t just seen as a place of serenity, but also as an entertainer’s paradise. So they’ve gone for amenity on amenity for their al fresco deck.

There’s a pizza oven. A barbecue. A … teppanyaki grill?? That will be used exactly one single time by whoever buys this home, but it’s definitely selling the judges on the deck.

“It’s got a lot of amenity for the space,” Darren enthuses, although it does eat into the living area having so many cooking options. Marty could not care less. He is in love with House 3, and the fact that they’ve continued their aesthetic beautifully into their al fresco area is a win for him. It’s minimalist and uncluttered, and to him, it’s perfect.

The outdoor area that has it all: a fridge, barbecue, pizza oven and teppanyaki grill. Photo: Channel 9 / 9 Now

He also notes that because they’ve designed their deck to blend into the garden, they can utilise other spaces for lounging, particularly around the nearby outdoor fireplace. But Darren is like, that’s cool … if it’s a mild day, not raining, and not too hot. Basically, Daylesford isn’t the land of perfect weather, and these guys haven’t really accounted for that.

Marty hopes the shed is now a Pilates shed, shifting it from their rumpus room. Well, guess what? Taz and Britt have not done that. Instead, they’ve made a tool shed and a speakeasy. Yes, a speakeasy, as in, a cosy little bar.

The judges like the tool shed, especially how they’ve tied it back to their garage with the same chequered flooring. Shaynna even says it’s “elegant and classy” for a tool shed. “It does its job, and it looks bloody good doing it,” Darren says.

The judges notice the lounge area won't be under cover. Photo: Channel 9 / 9 Now

Then, they once again mention the Pilates rumpus room. “I hope they moved those Pilates beds,” Marty says, and we all know that they have not, in fact, moved any Pilates beds, and instead have made a room to which Frank Sinatra would have brought his girlfriends for a nightcap.

“Hang on a second, is this a shed?” Darren wonders. He’s impressed, but confused, and Shaynna points out why. “Is this … compliant?” she asks.

'Is this compliant?' the judges ask. Photo: Channel 9 / 9 Now

There are Gyprock walls and ceiling, and a built-in bar. But Taz and Britt swear it got the tick of approval from The Block builders Nine In Six. But the judges aren’t sure about it. “This is such a gamble,” Marty says, unsure if it’ll get signed off. He’s also annoyed that they didn’t move the Pilates studio. “It’s not right,” he says in frustration. “This would be a beautiful Pilates room, look at the view, look at the sheers.” From a real estate perspective, he believes they’ve got a fundamental flaw in their floor plan, which “can deem it unsaleable”. Yikes!

Still, Shaynna says it’s “incredible” and commends them on their time management skills.

House 4: Alicia and Sonny

Sonny and Alicia are all about practicality this week. With the size of the land their house is on, they believe you’d be “mad” not to keep it as an area to store gardening gear and other tools. As for the deck, they’ve got a Christian Cole table and a lounge suite. “The deck’s decking,” Alicia says.

Shaynna first notices the brick detail that mirrors the front of their property. “That brick looks incredible!” she says, as the judges all ooh and aah over it, and Darren, of course, goes over to stroke their barbecue setup and say, “Yuuuum!”

'That brick looks incredible,' Shaynna says. Photo: Channel 9 / 9 Now

The excitement only ramps up. Shaynna spots not one, but two heaters. She loves the heaters! She also loves the sink! And the pizza oven! Then she almost loses her mind because they’ve also baked a little pizza in it. Darren, surprisingly, does not say “Yum,” making us believe that Darren’s diet now entirely consists of furnishings and wallpaper.

Marty is so impressed. He says it’s the most connected outdoor area he’s seen all day, and that it actually makes him love the inside even more, because it feels so fluid. Remember, Marty has notoriously hated a lot of what Sonny and Alicia have done so far, so it’s a real turnaround in attitude.

'I’m in Rancho Relaxo,' Marty says. Photo: Channel 9 / 9 Now

Darren is all about their style choices. He loves the outdoor rugs, saying they separate the living and dining areas, but also soften the harsher elements of the al fresco area, like the black roofing and frames. Is one of them a Darren Palmer outdoor rug? Yes, it is. Well played, Alicia and Sonny.

“They’ve really, really done the exterior of this house proud,” Darren says. It’s all working – the colour palette, the furnishing choices, everything. It’s soft, inviting, and still functional. “I’m in Rancho Relaxo,” Marty says, revealing himself to be a deep-cut fan of The Simpsons.

Marty is so Rancho Relaxo, he struggles to extract himself from the lounge to see the shed. But eventually, the others haul him up to visit. “This is the sheddiest shed we’ve seen,” he says when he enters the low-key space that’s all tools, a hidden pool table, and functionality.

Marty really likes it. It does what it says on the tin – the teams were meant to design al fresco spaces and sheds, and these two have done precisely that. Shaynna likes that there’s a games element with the dart board and secret pool table. She thinks it’s really versatile, too, thanks to their design choices, like windows and a practical yet stylish floor. “It can be whatever the buyer wants it to be,” she tells the others, but Marty has already clocked off and is having a solo game of darts. He’s not half-bad, either. Profitable new side hustle, perhaps?

“It’s a good old, functional, Australian Stratco shed,” Darren says, summing it up. “And I’m here for it.”

House 5: Robby and Mat

Everyone else may as well have not bothered this week, because surely Mat and Robby are going to take out Al Fresco and Shed Week with their famous, long-awaited wine cellar. It’s on display alongside their deck and shed, giving them a considerable edge over the other teams.

But first, the deck. The judges love that, once again, this is a team that has considered their interior and matched the design elements to their outdoor space.

Shaynna loves that Mat and Robby have chosen a large outdoor dining table that can easily accommodate 10 people. She also feels that teaming a lighter deck wood and furnishings prevents the space from feeling too closed in with its black walls and roof.

'There’s nothing here that a buyer would not enjoy,' Marty says. Photo: Channel 9 / 9 Now

Marty is all about their massive outdoor fireplace. “That is going to capture every single buyer’s attention,” he says.

However, Darren notes that it’s the smallest deck they’ve seen all day, and that’s because they’ve had to lose some width to accommodate the wine cellar. Does it matter, though? Marty doesn’t think so. He feels they’ve ticked all the boxes for a deck. “There’s nothing here that a buyer would not enjoy,” he says.

On to the shed. Mat and Robby have also divided theirs, so one half is for tools, and the other is a gym. The tool shed is very no-frills, except for a rustic bench that the judges love.

Darren wouldn’t leave the shed. Photo: Channel 9 / 9 Now

But it was the gym that had them drooling. “I want one of these at home!” Shaynna exclaims, but it’s Darren who is “nerding out”, as he calls it. Hey, you don’t get abs like his without a few bench presses, do you? He feels it’s got everything you could ever want in a home gym. “I wouldn’t leave the shed,” he says.

Then it’s time for what everyone’s been waiting for: the room we’re sure the other teams wish would have mysteriously burnt down in the last week. It’s the wine cellar, and it’s an underground beauty.

“Oh my god, this is insane!” Shaynna screams – actually screams, and honestly? We would too. It’s gorgeous, with Mat’s winning wallpaper on display and a long wine-tasting bench running down the centre. Shaynna points out the joinery, saying it’s classy, expensive, and justifies the existence of the cellar. It feels European to her, like it could be in a French chateau.

The judges think Robby and Mat are in another league thanks to their wine cellar. Photo: Channel 9 / 9 Now

“They swung hard, but this is a home run,” Darren says. But Marty pays them the highest compliment. He says that, by adding the cellar, they’ve taken themselves out of the competition and put their house into an entirely new bracket.

Mat and Robby literally have tears (and dollar signs) in their eyes.

Who won Al Fresco and Shed Week on The Block 2025?

Robby and Mat win Al Fresco and Shed Week Photo: Channel 9 / 9 Now

Robby and Mat win Al Fresco and Shed Week with a perfect score of 30. “Tens across the board!” Mat says. That nets them $40,000 for their garden.

Sonny and Alicia do really well, too, scoring 29 (which includes a 10 from Darren) and coming in second place.

The best budgeters this week were Han and Can who nab $20,000 – unsurprising, given they did most of the work themselves (and paid for it with some pretty terrible room scores). Was it a genius tactic, or a happy accident? Either way, they’ve gotten a nice cash boost.

House Team Score Place
House 1 Emma and Ben 26 4th
House 2 Han and Can 21 5th
House 3 Britt and Taz 27 3rd
House 4 Sonny and Alicia 29 2nd
House 5 Robby and Mat 30 1st

Next week, it’s backyard time, and that means high stress and some “snake” moves, as Mat tells us while threateningly buzzing his electric drill.
