An Adelaide family has ventured into unfamiliar waters with a unique backyard pool.

The sleek glass-and-tile structure rises from the ground like a giant fishtank.

From a distance, you would be forgiven for thinking you had stumbled upon a luxury aquarium tucked in somebody’s back garden.

But there is a practical reason behind this one-of-a-kind creation.

In small courtyards like this one, space is at a premium.

The high glass walls of the above-ground pool create a natural barrier that keeps kids safe without the need to build an extra wall of fencing.

It’s a neat solution that solves space and safety needs in one sweep.

The pool – which is located in the beachside suburb of Grange – has been named the best Small Pool of the Year by the Swimming Pool and Spa Association (SPASA).

It’s one of 13 pools to be recognised in this year’s award list.

The design inspiration behind the winning pools is eclectic and varied.

In Melbourne’s Clifton Hill, an undulating black pool and spa duo grow out of the moss like pieces of Darth Vader’s spaceship.

In Mittagong, New South Wales, a tiered concrete pool steps down a hillside like layers of a wedding cake.

“We’re seeing a shift towards more curved and circular shapes in new concrete pools and spas, with interior mosaic tiling also rising in popularity” SPASA CEO Kristin Brookfield told Domain

“In fibreglass, the latest shells integrate wading zones and spa sections into a single mould, giving families a broader range of options to enjoy.”

Space-savvy designs are also on the rise, according to Brookfield.

“Spa ownership is an increasing choice for many Australian and New Zealand families with shrinking block sizes and the opportunity to enjoy a spa all year round,” she said.
