Recently I discovered an entire side of Lake Burley Griffin that I hadn’t seen before.

I sat on one of the pontoons to the west, where fewer exercisers frequent and the mood is much calmer, and took in the vistas across the expansive still water to the National Arboretum and Government House.

I pondered if Walter Burley Griffin himself knew early on that his city plans would play out in the wondrous beauty it did.

This green pocket of the capital houses the suburb Yarralumla and is where you’ll find the property elite, parallel to Red Hill and Forest’s Golden Mile along Mugga Way, but with the added luxury of waterfront views.

One of this week’s properties in our list of top homes to inspect enjoys a prime position on Schlich Street and is as gorgeous as its surroundings.

Yarralumla

This Schlich Street family home on 812 square metres is one of just 33 homes separated from the lake by a narrow strip of reserve.

Its architectural style fuses a modernist influence with a classical aesthetic to produce a distinctive street presence.

Inside, high ceilings and plenty of glass ensure it is flooded with light. That combination provides the perfect stage for formal living and dining spaces, joined by new American oak herringbone parquetry, through to the sleek kitchen hub.

A butler’s pantry also offers plenty of preparation space. The adjoining casual meals and family room can seat at least 20 while a balcony offers the perfect spot for Sunday brunch.

And parents won’t be disappointed with the level of style and comfort in the main en suite or main bathroom. Even the laundry is a work of art with its marble tiling.

Jerrabomberra

Nestled in a quiet cul-de-sac with views of the Brindabella Mountains and overlooking Jerrabomberra, this four-bedroom home is sure to impress the modern family.

Split-level in design and offering gracious living spaces (both in and outdoor), large bedrooms, a gourmet kitchen and contemporary bathrooms, it is easy to see why this home will not be on the market for long – particularly in such a sought-after suburb.

Three bedrooms are located on the upper level. The master bedroom is complete with walk-in robe and en suite.

6 Birubi Place, Jerrabomberra

The main bathroom is lavish in size and features a large spa bath.

As you move down the timber stairs into the formal living area, you’ll be impressed by the high ceilings, new fireplace and large windows that peer out onto one of the two outdoor entertaining areas.

Hughes

Step inside 39 McNicoll Place as there is one feature that will immediately command your attention – the wine cellar.

This bespoke cellar is properly integrated into the home, yet it stands out as an exquisite artwork.

The chrome pendant casts ambient light over the timber joinery and shelving. A feature sink sits at the back centre of the bench, like a baptismal basin at a church altar. Both are a sign from the heavens above that this room is somewhat sacred.

Upon further inspection, the home has many other elements to relish.

Outside, the entertaining area is next to a custom heated spa with waterfall. Even in the depths of Canberra’s frosty winter, you’ll be drawn to its steamy embrace.
