On the tranquil Cornelian Bay foreshore in Tasmania, a renovated boat shed with a sauna imported from Sweden is on the market with $500,000 price hopes.
The property sits over the waters of the River Derwent, tucked down a secluded track along the waterfront in Newtown. It feels a world away, but is a mere five-minute drive north of the Hobart CBD.
“From the outside, it just looks like a boat shed,” says LJ Hooker listing agent Cara Montgomery. “But you walk through the door, and it’s just absolutely stunning.”
The 66-square-metre interior was recently renovated and includes a full-sized bathroom (with a shower and composting toilet), a kitchen and a carpeted loft. An expansive deck with glass balustrading overlooks the river, and a sauna rounds out the package.
“The sauna was brought over from Sweden a few years ago,” Montgomery says.
Boat sheds in this tightly held strip rarely come to market.

“The current owners have been here forever,” Montgomery says. “They’ve been in this one for 18 years, but before that, they owned another one in the same row.
“The whole family have grown up there and made lots of memories.”

“A lot of owners hold onto them as long as they can,” Montgomery says.
“This is the third one that’s gone on the market this year; before that, it’s been quite a long time.”

Montgomery also listed the previous two. No. 30 sold for $340,000, while No. 34 went for $460,000. Both, she notes, were not recently renovated, making No. 34 a ready-to-go turnkey offering.
Interest has been strong from interstate and local buyers, including investors and holidaymakers.
“A lot of people are trying to be a part of that beautiful history,” Montgomery says.
She expects the new owner to be from another family looking to create their own waterfront memories.
