A New Zealand couple are baffled after finding a mystery key in their new home.
Roimata Wilkey and her husband found the single antique passkey on top of a door.
“We randomly found this key above the door in a house we just bought,” Wilkey wrote in a video posted to TikTok.
In the video, the key is clearly bolted to the top of what appears to be a bedroom door.
A section of the door also appears to have been carved out to make room for the key.
“What is this key for?” Wilkey captioned the now-viral video.
“Our house is 56 years old.”
The video, which has been viewed more than five million times, attracted scores of comments.
Some were similarly perplexed by the key’s location.
“That’s how horror movies start,” one person wrote.
“The way the door has been chiselled out is kind of crazy,” a second person shared.
Others took a more practical approach.
“A skeleton key. Dates anywhere from 1800 -2000s. That style of key looks like the late 90s just by its figure and shape,” one person wrote.
“Probably for an old door lock or gun safe. Skeleton keys weren’t primarily used for cash safes in the 90s.”
“It looks like it’s fixed there to keep the door ajar,” a second person wrote.
“It’s probably for that door, my house has the same kind of keys for the doors. If it’s not the handles were probably replaced and they forgot about the key,” a third person shared.
“It’s bolted to the door. I guarantee you it’s a budget way to prop open the door,” another wrote.
“I bet whoever did it is laughing at the time you’ll spend looking for a hidden room/safe.”
