As one of Canberra’s oldest suburbs, Reid is a reminder of the origins of our city, as well as a reflection of where it is now.
Much of the suburb was built in the mid-1920s, providing homes for the pioneering public servants arriving in the new nation’s capital.
Some of these beautiful homes still stand, and most of the suburb is heritage-listed.
Now, due to its proximity to the city, you’ll also find new apartment developments, particularly along Cooyong Street, which is the city border on the west side.
As well as the city, Reid is also close to Braddon, Ainslie and Campbell, and all those suburbs have to offer in terms of lifestyle, with their plethora of restaurants, bars and cafes.
Belle Property Canberra principal Louise Harget says Reid is a suburb where you can enjoy the best of two worlds.
“It’s just moments from the city, yet nestled in a tranquil, leafy setting that feels like a charming forest retreat,” she says.
“This is a suburb where people tend to settle for the long haul; it’s truly a forever home kind of place. Most residents stay for years … drawn by the beautiful, close-knit community.”
That said, Reid attracts a range of buyers, from young families looking to secure a place within the sought-after Canberra Grammar School north catchment zone, to downsizing couples whose children have left home, but who still want space to host family gatherings and accommodate visiting grandchildren.
“Buyers with an appreciation for charm and character are drawn to the timeless appeal of a heritage-listed, single-level home,” Harget says.
While these heritage-listed homes don’t often sell overnight, she says buyers who value the rich history and character of the area are always looking.
“Many Canberrans really appreciate the suburb’s heritage, something that not all buyers from outside the ACT quite get,” Harget says.
“So, while turnover is low, demand remains strong, making it a sought-after area with quality buyers ready to invest in this unique part of Canberra.”
According to Domain, the media house price is $1.95 million and the median unit price is $580,000
