Indoor sports centres have become popular community recreational destinations and the best of them draw hundreds of participants on a weekly basis.

Mpowerdome in Fadden had been Canberra’s largest multi-purpose indoor sports facility and recreation centre since 2006, but it closed about two-and-a-half years ago.

At its peak it catered for indoor cricket, soccer, netball, tennis, AFL, touch football, floorball and fitness classes. There were venues for hire, a cafe and lounge as well as massage and beauty therapy options.

Mina Etminan of Luton Properties Tuggeranong says the centre had been a popular community destination until its unfortunate closure.

“The local community desperately needs a facility like this,” she says.

“The Mpowerdome was very popular for all types of sporting and community activities.”

Etminan speculated that the best potential new owner of the centre might well be a body like the ACT government.

“It would certainly help fulfil its role in delivering a community benefit,” she says.

The dome’s construction consists of large extruded aluminium portal frames with tensioned PVC fabric providing all-weather protection of the sports surfaces within.

The building is the largest structure of its type in Australia at some 156 metres long, 38 metres wide and 13 metres high.

It sits on a block in excess of 1.3 hectares that includes vehicle bays with potential for an upgrade and expansion of car parking facilities.
