A woman has been left shocked after discovering a labyrinth of tunnels and rooms behind a locked door in her home in southern France.

Victoria Vale noticed the door under the stairs when she moved into her house in Montpellier, France two years ago.

But until this week, she never knew what lay behind it.

The Canadian-born DJ broke open the door over the weekend after noticing a draught. She discovered “a network of tunnels and rooms”.

“The tunnels just keep going, maybe 5 rooms? Some rooms have power, others with flowing water,” she wrote in a now-viral Reddit post.

“There are many stained blankets, with perhaps blood.”

In just two days, Vale’s post received 19,000 upvotes and 1500 comments.

As well as the disturbing stained blankets, the tunnels were filled with cockroaches and mould.

“I filmed a DJ set down there for an hour and I feel like my lungs have never been the same. If I’m patient zero for the next plague let it be known I’m sorry,” she joked.

She believes the basement complex is an abandoned underground boiler room. She said the boilers still make noise from time to time.

Despite the spooky atmosphere, Vale headed down into the tunnels at 3:30am one morning to film an hour-long techno DJ set, which she uploaded to YouTube

“The reaction has been mostly positive, and a lot of people are flocking to the video to check it or show support to my music,” she told NewsWeek

“Many people were also referencing the horror movie ‘Barbarian’ as supposedly the basement resembles it almost identically, which is a little wild.”

Some commenters on Reddit warned that the mouldy basement could pose a health risk.

“A mould infected area has to be completely sealed up and negative air pressure added inside along with ozone machines, air scrubbers, and antimicrobial aerators […] It’s a really intense and expensive process,” one user said.

Others joked that the basement could be a real estate selling point.

“So much new square footage!” someone said.

“All I could think of was OP busting out the tape measure lol,” another user added.
