If walls could speak, those at 26 Zouch Street in Young might share some of the ritual secrets of Freemasonry.

The fraternal society was behind the construction of this two-storey building in 1888, but its latter day incarnation as the Mullino Bar & Grill might tell some different tales.

The heritage-listed, regional landmark building is set to be auctioned on Friday, October 21, at noon.

Owners and long-time Young farmers Andy and Suzy Forrest say it’s time for them to return their focus onto their property where they run sheep and grow wheat and canola.

“We bought the building in 1999 and have run it as a fine-dining restaurant and later as a bar and grill,” Andy says.

“It’s Freemasonry origin has ensured that it was extremely well-built and it is a very solid construction.”

Andy says Mullino was one of Young’s top eating-out options and it also benefited from tourist traffic.

“It’s very popular with the locals and it gets even busier during the cherry season in November and December,” he says.

“We think it’s the right time for someone with new ideas and energy to take it to the next stage.”

Auction marketing agent and commercial specialist David Coombes of Ray White Young said the building offered a unique hospitality opportunity and had already attracted strong local and external interest.

“This well-known commercial property is unique to the Young market and commercial freehold property market in the CBD is very tightly held, he says.

“It’s adaptable to a wide range of commercial interests in the arts, professional service, as a function centre, a boutique or other kind of retail.

“The building’s unrivalled character and ambiance offer patrons a unique dining or events experience like no other in Young,” Coombes says.

Heritage features include five-metre ceilings upstairs and fireplaces, counterbalanced by the modern conveniences of split system air conditioning and natural gas outlets,

The ground floor comprises some 200 square metres and includes entrance foyer, waiting lounge, public dining area, bar and restrooms.

Upstairs, via a cedar staircase, is a further 200 square metres plus of space including a meeting and main lodge rooms and storage.

The building is zoned “B4 Mixed Use” and sits on an overall block size of some 1012 square metres that includes a large private alfresco courtyard and generous off-street parking.

It has Olympic highway exposure and is close to a cluster of fast-food restaurants.
