After years of pointing north, Melbourne’s culinary compass has swung distinctly south. Prahran is suddenly where the action is, thanks to a slew of openings from some of the smartest in the business.
Hot on the heels of Paul Wilson’s Wilson & Market, and Neptune from the Hanoi Hannah crew, comes The Smith – a multimillion-dollar makeover of a High Street pub by the team behind Lucy Liu.
Come summer, this place will be party central, when they pull back the huge retractable roof over the palm-filled Atrium bar and start frying up a storm in the soon to open Smith & Chips.
Meanwhile there’s plenty to keep us amused with an inventive cocktail list, orange- and pink-sprayed walls by artist Ash Keating, and a mod-Oz menu from co-owner chef, Michael Lambie.
The food is made for grazing and sharing – so you might kick off with The Smith Terrine and a plate of Hiramasa kingfish, before getting messy with Kansas City pork ribs with house-made barbecue sauce.
You may want to keep the delectable king prawns with toasted coconut salad and satay sauce to yourself.
